Negombo is a ideal place to start and end your Holiday in Sri Lanka. Sun worshippers, prepare to stretch out, curl your toes in the fine yellow sand, and get a glorious tan on sundreched palm caressed beaches in Negombo 10 Minutes drive of the Bandanaraike Airport.
Negombo City A characteristic fishing town north of Colombo, it is a mere 6 km. from the International Airport. Set amid lush groves of coconut palms, it breathes the spirit of the sea. Negombo is a gourmet paradise with sea food in plenty. Old world fishing craft like the outrigger canoe and the catamaran bring seer, skipjack, herring and mullet, promfret and amber-jack while lobster and prawns caught in the lagoon. Apart from beaches and sea-food Negombo has a unique charms of its own with narrow streets, small boutiques and Catholic Churches dotting the landscape.
The Dutch captured the town from the Portuguese in 1640, lost it again the same year, then captured it again in 1644. The British then took it from them in 1796 without a struggle. During the Dutch era Negombo was one of the most important sources of cinnamon, and there are still reminders of the European days. Many people make Negombo their last stop in Sri Lanka before flying out, as it’s conveniently close to Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake.
